Wet Underfloor Heating System

UFCH stands for under floor central heating and is a very efficient and effective way to heat ground floor rooms. There are a couple of ways of achieving this but the best type if you are fitting out a large area, or want to convert your entire home, is a system called a ‘wet’ under floor heating system. To achieve this you would need to extend your central heating. A Surbiton Plumber is familiar with UFCH.

Considerations:

a). Best way to lay the pipework required.

b). A proven way to control the temperature of the system.

Looking at (b) first, the best way to have a great steady temperature is by using something called a blending valve. The boiler continues to create water at about 80 degrees C but is kept from the under floor heating system. The blender valve will monitor the water temperature in the UFCH (under floor central heating), and add a small amount of water as needed to keep the temperature between 35-40 degrees C. A smaller UFCH system, will do the same by using a thermostatically controlled blending valve. Large systems have a thing called a manifold. It is a mix of a circulating pump, a blending valve and a series of valves to manage the system flow, and isolate, if need, the heating in certain rooms. Really large systems exist, and in these, the efficiency is reduced as the boiler is switched on and off every couple of minutes to top up the UFCH. Surbiton Plumbers can fit UFCH systems. A thing called a ‘buffer tank could be added. This is a thermal store, or a large body of water kept at the correct system temperature which would fit in between the boiler and manifold. This allows the boiler heat the thermal store, generating the heat for the manifold. This store loses heat quite slowly, so keeps heating the manifold for long periods without help from the boiler which saves energy. This is ideal for systems that use an air source heat pump. This allows the heat pump to run during the day to heat the ‘buffer tank’ which it is cost effective, then use the hot water to supply the UFCH in the evening.
