Good piping and strong joints are the foundation of any good plumbing system. However, knowing what materials to use for your plumbing system is very confusing for someone without any plumbing experience. There are also a number of fittings that can be used to connect pipes like T fittings, couplers, 45-degree turn or the 90-degree turn. The most common pipes found in residential properties are PVC plastic for drain lines and copper pipes for water supply lines. Copper Piping is very durable and is available in a variety of grades. However, they are relatively expensive but it is definitely worth it for the durability. Type M meets the minimum building codes and is the most basic grade of copper piping. Type L is typically two times stronger than Type M which is a fantastic choice for upgrading your plumbing system but is more expensive. Then there is Type K which you often only find in commercial buildings which are even stronger and require fewer joints. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) piping comes in a range of different schedules and has revolutionised modern plumbing. There are two common options which are Schedule 40 which is sufficient for most residential plumbing and Schedule 80 which is used for more substantial plumbing projects. PVC pipes can be cut using a thick-bladed PVC saw and all you have to do is use short strokes to make a groove and then apply more pressure to get a clean cut. Another fairly common pipe used in residential properties is PEX which is a flexible but very strong pipe. You only need to pull an entire pipe run and only have to create two joints. PEX can also be manoeuvred like a hose so it can be easily placed in position.
